Does Your Dog Need An Electric Dog Fence?

Pet owners who really love their animals know they have to keep them safe. They take them to the vet, brush their hair and care for their teeth and nails, get them micro chipped in case they get lost and they even build fences to keep their dogs from wandering away and getting hurt.

But many owners struggle with the decision on whether or not to get their pet an electric dog fence. They sometimes think they're cruel or painful. If you are deciding whether to get one or not, then you need to consider their benefits.

An electronic dog fence works by burying an electic cable under the ground, marking with it the desired perimeter of the electric fence. Then, a receiver is built into a dogís collar so that when it attempts to walk outside the perimeter, a mild shock is applied to stop them.

An advantage of an electronic dog fence is that it doesn't block the view of your yard, like a wooden fence would do. You also donít have to deal with things like zoning laws since you donít have to get permits as you arenít actually building anything. Therefore, it's a great way to keep a dog in without altering your property.

There are also some disadvantages, of course. While an electronic fence will not let your dog go out, other dogs can come in perfectly. Regular fences present a small obstacle for thieves who want to break into your house. Depending on their type, some fences can actually make houses look better. Electric dog fences can be overcome if you set them so mild that your dog can barely feel the shock, specially if your dog gets too excited. In addition, your dog might be "locked out," since crossing the perimeter back will again shock it.

An electric dog fence is a good idea for keeping your dog inside. Unlike other fences, it doesn't block the way or view of your yard. However, if your dog manages to get to the other side of the electronic dog fence, it'll have problems coming back.
